Design and Build of a Semi-Automated Frame Assembly Machine and Screwbridge Machine
Project Summary (part 1)
Dodd Modular was contracted to create a custom light-gauge steel (LGS) framing machine featuring a unique under/over screw application that simultaneously drives screws into both the top and bottom of the frame.
The initial requirements were unclear, and the concept of assembling modular wall panels with an over/under screwing mechanism is novel in the industry.
A creative design was essential to develop a system that constructs and aligns the frames for the over/under screw guns to fasten them securely.
Technological challenges solved
Ability to handle varying weight of panels
Ergonomic design to fit within the client’s factory
Ability to handle uneven weight distribution
Testing of the under/over screw application at Dodd Modular
Test building a LGS frame with the under/over screw application at Dodd Modular
Testing of wall assembly line (framing system & screwbridge)

Project Summary (part 2)
Dodd Modular was contracted to create a custom screwbridge machine for attaching plasterboard sheets to light-gauge steel (LGS) frames.
This technology is novel within the Modular factory system, making Dodd Modular’s design unique in the industry.
The project necessitated innovative designs for both mechanical and control systems to feed and align the frames for multiple screw guns to fasten the plasterboards
Technological challenges solved
Differing sizes of LGS frames through the system
Minimal manual input whilst in operation
Ability to consistently set screw positions
